The Wednesday Ladies work on quilts for newborn babies
We meet at the Florence Douglas Senior Center,
333 Amador Street, in Vallejo on the first and third Saturdays of each month at 10:00 A.M.
Our annual membership fee is $24. Quilt-related businesses are welcome to join as associate members and may advertise in our monthly newsletter.
You may attend one meeting as a guest before deciding to join us for fun.
For further information, write us at P.O. Box 5515, Vallejo, CA 94591.
Some of the highlights of our meetings include:
Programs: On the first Saturday of each month we have our general meeting, followed by a pot-luck luncheon. In the afternoon there is a program, a demonstration or a workshop to help members improve and expand their quilting techniques. The third Saturday is used for all-day classes and/or open sewing, where members can work on individual project. This is a great day to get help from other members.
Block of the Month: Sometimes themes are chosen for each year. In 1999 the theme was Underground Railroad, based on the book “Hidden in Plain View.” As the instructions for each block were presented, an explanation of the block’s hidden meaning was given. Other themes used have been Stars, Famous Women and Seasons. For 2007 we are making blocks based on states of our members.
Show and Tell: Members share their latest creations. Seeing the works of others helps our own creativity and keeps us motivated.
Library: We have an extensive library of books, tapes, templates and catalogues that can be checked out on a monthly basis by paid members.
Opportunity Quilt: Each year we offer a stunning quilt for a drawing which is held at the December meeting. Previous quilts have included a Stained Glass Design, a Hawaiian hand appliquéd quilt and a 1950’s quilt made using Tulip blocks donated to our club. Our 2006 quilt is called Victorian Rose and was an old fashioned Dresden Plate design. You might have seen it hanging at JFK library. Our 2007 quilt is an original appliquéd quilt called Asian Garden. Tickets are still available for this quilt to be given away at our December 2 meeting.
OTHER ACTIVITIES have included:
Challenge Quilt: Starting with a common theme or a set fabric(s), each participant makes a small quilt or clothing item, which is displayed at one of our meetings.
Round Robin: Participants start with their own row/block. Projects are rotated within the group and each participant adds their own touch to each project. At the end of the year, each top is returned to its owner, ready to be finished!
Wednesday Ladies: Our “Wednesday Ladies” meet each Wednesday at the Senior Center from 8:00 to 11:00 to work on our Outreach program. Each year we donate more than 200 baby quilts to local hospitals, 30 quilts to the Veterans’ Home in Yountville and in 1999 we made 28 quilts for the “Quilts for Kosovo” cause. This past year we made quilts for Hurricane Katrina survivors.
Open Sewing: On the third Saturday, of months in which we have not hired an outside teacher, we have open sewing. Bring whatever you’re working on and spend the day sewing with other members of the club. This is a great opportunity to get help and see what others in the club are doing.
If you are a quilter or interested in learning to quilt, please feel free to stop by the Senior Center on Wednesday to see those ladies in action or visit one of our guild meetings at the Senior Center. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our love of quilting.
